Bird t. is a cloth sparrow, made from leftover materials from furniture manufacturer Gelderland. This small bird is a design by Christien Meindertsma from the "Offcuts" collection for the Kuperus & Gardenier label. It is the little sister of the fabric dove from the Pigeon Service project.
When upholstering their furniture, Gelderland is left with remnants of high-quality wool fabric. Christien Meindertsma has found beautiful applications for these, such as the Pigeon Service and the Saddle Blanket. After their production, smaller fabric remnants remain, just large enough to make this sparrow. The high quality and variety of the fabrics result in a new series of beautifully colored doves and sparrows. They are handmade and filled with flaxseed.

Thomas Eyck
The name of the sparrow Bird t. refers to the name of Thomas Eyck and his t.e. collection. Thomas Eyck was a publisher of exclusive contemporary design products. In collaboration with prominent Dutch designers such as Studio Job and Hella Jongerius, he created various collections. The starting point was often a material – such as glass, tin, or ceramic – or a concept. Thomas Eyck chose the right designer and the right production process for this.
The collaboration between Christien Meindertsma and Thomas Eyck was extensive. Many of her designs could be found in his t.e. collection. Thomas Eyck's passing in 2023 prompted Christien Meindertsma to create the Fabric Sparrow Bird t. as a tribute.
About Christien Meindertsma
Christien Meindertsma studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven from 1998 to 2003, where she was taught by, among others, Hella Jongerius. In her work, she investigates the lifespan and use of products and raw materials. Careful research and documentation, themes such as local production and untapped raw materials characterize her work. She also tries to clarify the origin of everyday products, of which people are often no longer aware due to globalization and industrial production processes. Sometimes the research itself is the end result. In other cases, her research leads to commercial products.
Meindertsma’s work is included in the collections of MoMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Vitra Design Museum. She has won various prestigious awards, such as several Dutch Design Awards, the Index Award, and the Future Award.
