Lamps that are good for something

Some lamps are unusual enough that they fit no category. Small, portable, a light for your bag, or made of a material you would not expect in a lamp. Remarkable for their design — or because they solve a problem you only now realise you had.

Light you take with you

The Little Sun by artist Olafur Eliasson is a solar-powered lamp. Ideal for a festival or for camping. The Sonnenglas charges by solar power too. This lamp, shaped like a preserving jar, has a solar panel in the lid and is handmade in South Africa. Both lamps support charitable projects in Africa.

The SOI handbag light comes on by itself as soon as you open your bag, so you no longer hunt for your keys in the dark. After a few seconds it switches off again. The Mina by Lexon comes in three sizes, from small enough for a bedside table to large enough for the dining table. All rechargeable, all dimmable.

A lamp made from an egg

The Egglamp is exactly what the name says: a light made from a real eggshell. The light falls softly through it, and no two are the same. It has a standard E27 fitting, so it works anywhere. It looks best of all in the concrete holder shaped like an egg box.

Looking for something else

For the table there are table lamps, for the garden outdoor lighting. The full range is under lighting.
