The Chaku is a trivet made of two triangular blocks of solid oak, joined by a rope. A design by the Berlin duo KellerFreyschmidt for the Dutch design label Vij5.
Fits under any pan
Because the two wooden blocks are joined by a rope, you decide how to lay them down: side by side for a saucepan, far apart for an oven dish. The triangular shape gives stability whichever way you place them, and keeps the hot base off the tabletop. After dinner the trivet goes in the drawer, where it takes up little room. Or you hang it by the rope from a hook in the kitchen.
The name comes from martial arts
Chaku is derived from the nunchaku: two sticks joined by a rope or chain, from Japanese martial arts. The resemblance is unmistakable, the use of course quite different.
Made in the Eindhoven region
Vij5 has the Chaku made in small batches in the Eindhoven region. The wood is solid and treated with Osmo hard wax oil. The oil sinks into the wood rather than sitting on top of it as a layer, so the grain stays perceptible and a scratch can be touched up. The rope is made in the Netherlands from European recycled PET bottles.
