Oak Shelf for Coatrack by the Meter | Vij5

This oak shelf belongs to Coatrack by the Meter, the wall coat rack by Maarten Baptist for the Dutch design label Vij5. It is a solid board of 19.5 × 12 cm that rests on exactly two hooks of the rack. You hang it on and lift it off again just as easily; nothing is screwed and nothing is drilled.

A place for your keys and your post

Next to the coats it gives you a small surface for keys, a phone or the post — right where you come in. It works just as well as decoration: a small vase, a plant pot or an ornament on the warm oak offsets the plain steel. Because the shelf only rests on the hooks, you can move it along a few hooks without tools whenever you rearrange the rack.

Part of the system

Coatrack by the Meter is built from separate parts you combine yourself: racks of 20, 50 and 100 cm, a corner piece to turn a corner or set a difference in height, and extension pieces without hooks in 20 and 50 cm for a quiet stretch between the hooks. The shelf fits every length and every colour, because the hooks are ten centimetres apart throughout. For inspiration and an overview of all the parts, see the overview page for Coatrack by the Meter.

Oak with hard wax oil

The shelf is solid oak, treated with Osmo hard wax oil. The oil sinks into the wood rather than sitting on top of it as a layer, so the grain stays perceptible and a scratch can be touched up. The packaging is Dutch recycled cardboard.
