Heller Max Plate Small is a set of stackable plates made of thermoplastic and melamine. This set was designed by the Italian designers Lella & Massimo Vignelli for the American brand Heller. The tableware consists of mugs, bowls and large and small plates. The design is such that the parts cleverly interlock and create a striking shape when stacked, reminiscent of a work of art. All these parts are available in 5 different colours and in a Rainbow set.
Heller Dinnerware can be stacked in a tall, straight column, which means the tableware takes up less space and keeps the contents of your cupboard organised. Each piece fits securely into the other thanks to a sturdy rim on the bottom, which also lifts the tableware a bit off the table top, making it seem to float. Hellerware brings happiness to the table. The beautiful shapes and colours put a smile on your face.
This collection was designed in 1964 and is still loved and appreciated by design enthusiasts worldwide. At its debut in 1964, Vignelli tableware won the Compasso d'Oro, the most prestigious award for industrial design in the world.

Heller and the Vignelli's
When Heller brand founder Alan Heller saw Vignelli’s compact stackable tableware in a museum in the late 1960s and learned that the original manufacturer had closed down, he contacted Lella and Massimo Vignelli to put it back into production. Commonly known as Hellerware, this tableware was the first product in Heller’s range and it was the beginning of a long and very special collaboration between Heller and the Vignellis.
Lella and Massimo Vignelli were among the most influential designers in the world. They brought clarity and coherence to countless projects. In their 2004 book "Design is One," they said that if you can design one thing, you can design anything. The idea is that designing one thing means you can design anything. The methodology is the same, regardless of the subject.”
According to the Vignellis, design should be “semantically correct, syntactically consistent, pragmatically understandable, visually powerful, intellectually elegant, and timeless.” Throughout their long and productive careers, the Vignellis put these principles into practice. From 1957 to 1960, after training as architects in Italy, the couple went on exchange to the United States. There, it became clear that their mission was: “Better design for a better world.” The Saratoga furniture and the melamine stackable tableware by Heller both demonstrate a strict and clear design style.
The Vignellis settled permanently in the United States and in 1965 they co-founded the American branch of Unimark International. The design firm created distinctive corporate identities for companies such as American Airlines, Ford, Knoll International, the Transit Authorities of New York City and Washington, DC – and for Heller.
In 1971, the Vignellis opened their own office in New York, called Vignelli Associates. They worked on a variety of projects that were impressive in their scope and design. These included graphic design programs for the United States National Park Service, Bloomingdales, Lancia, Fratelli Rossetti, The Guggenheim, the Salone del Mobile, and Benetton; showrooms for Poltrona Frau, Steelcase, Italcenter, Hauserman, and Artemide; interiors for the Minneapolis Museum of Fine Arts, Joseph Magnin, The United States Postal Service, and Saint Peter's Church in Manhattan; exhibitions for the Louvre and BMW; furniture such as the Handkerchief chair (Knoll, 1982-1987); products for the Ciga Hotels and Heller; and books for many publishers.
The Vignellis have received many awards. Massimo has won awards for graphic design worldwide, and Lella has won awards for interiors. In 2003, they received the National Design Lifetime Achievement Award. Their art can be found in museums around the world, including MoMA, the Met, and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.
