Heller Max Cup & Saucer is a set of 6 stackable coffee cups with a handle, made of thermoplastic and melamine. This set was designed by Italian designers Lella & Massimo Vignelli for the American brand Heller. The components cleverly interlock, creating a striking stacked form reminiscent of a work of art.
Stackable tableware
Heller's Cup & Saucers – as well as its Dinnerware – is designed to be stacked in a tall, straight column, making the tableware take up less space and keeping your cupboard tidy. Each piece fits securely into the next thanks to a sturdy rim at the bottom, which also lifts the tableware off the tabletop, making it appear to float. Hellerware brings happiness to the table. Its beautiful shapes and colours bring a smile to your face.
Timeless design
This reissue of the original 1964 design honours the subtle and thoughtful design, in which each handle is connected to the wall of the cup. This creates a semi-circular open space at the top: a thoughtful touch that sets this coffee set apart from all others. The subtly reflective curves, clean lines and minimalist block design are a visual treat that will make your coffee-drinking experience at home or in the office even more special.
The design is still loved and appreciated by design enthusiasts worldwide. Upon its debut in 1964, Vignelli's tableware won the Compasso d'Oro, the most prestigious award for industrial design in the world. Heller Max Cups and Saucers are part of the permanent collections of the New York MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

Heller and the Vignellis
When Heller brand founder Alan Heller saw Vignelli's compact stackable dinnerware in a museum in the late 1960s and discovered that the original manufacturer had closed its business, he contacted Lella and Massimo Vignelli to put it back into production. This dinnerware, widely known as Hellerware, was the first product in Heller's range and marked the beginning of a long and very special collaboration between Heller and the Vignellis.
About Lella and Massimo Vignelli
Lella and Massimo Vignelli were among the most influential designers in the world. They brought clarity and cohesion to countless projects. In their 2004 book "Design is One," they said that if you can design one thing, you can design everything. The idea is that designing one thing means you can design everything. The methodology is the same, regardless of the subject.”
According to the Vignellis, design must be “semantically correct, syntactically consistent, pragmatically understandable, visually powerful, intellectually elegant, and timeless.” Throughout their long and productive career, the Vignellis put these principles into practice. From 1957 to 1960, after training as architects in Italy, the couple went on an exchange to the US. Here, their mission became clear: "Better design for a better world." The Saratoga furniture and Heller's melamine stacking dinnerware both demonstrate a strict and clear design style.
The Vignellis settled permanently in the US, and in 1965, they co-founded the American branch of Unimark International. This design agency created distinctive corporate identities for companies such as American Airlines, Ford, Knoll International, the Transit Authorities of New York City and Washington, DC – and for Heller.
In 1971, the Vignellis started their own office in New York, called Vignelli Associates. They worked on various projects that were impressive in their scope and design. These included graphic design programs for the United States National Park Service, Bloomingdale's, Lancia, Fratelli Rossetti, The Guggenheim, the Salone del Mobile, and Benetton; showrooms for Poltrona Frau, Steelcase, Italcenter, Hauserman, and Artemide; interiors for the Minneapolis Museum of Fine Arts, Joseph Magnin, The United States Postal Service, and Saint Peter's Church in Manhattan; exhibitions for the Louvre and BMW; furniture such as the Handkerchief chair (Knoll, 1982-1987); products for the Ciga hotels and Heller; and books for many publishers.
The Vignellis received many awards. Massimo won graphic design awards worldwide, and Lella won awards for interiors. In 2003, they received the National Design Lifetime Achievement Award. Their art can be found in museums worldwide, such as MoMA, the Met, and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.
