Pigeon Service is a cloth pigeon made from residual materials from furniture manufacturer Gelderland. It is a design by Christien Meindertsma from the "Offcuts" collection for the Kuperus & Gardenier label. When upholstering their furniture, Gelderland has leftover high-quality woolen fabric. Christien Meindertsma has found beautiful applications for this, such as the Pigeon Service. The high quality and variety of the fabrics result in a new series of beautifully colored pigeons. They are handmade and filled with flaxseed. This textile homing pigeon has a pocket under its left wing, in which a note with a message, or a secret message, can be conveyed.

Pigeon Service - Christien Meindertsma
"Pigeon Service" from 2015 is part of a permanent installation for the Texture Museum of Flax in Kortrijk. This museum tells the history of the local linen and flax industry. During the First World War, the German occupiers held thousands of pigeons captive here on suspicion of conveying secret military information. Christien Meindertsma combined both stories with the design of a linen pigeon. More than 300 pigeons of different weaves were made by volunteers from the museum and exhibited throughout the museum.
About Christien Meindertsma
Christien Meindertsma studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven from 1998 to 2003, where she was taught by, among others, Hella Jongerius. In her work, she investigates the lifespan and use of products and raw materials. Careful research and documentation, themes such as local production and untapped raw materials characterize her work. She also tries to make the origin of everyday products, which people are often no longer aware of due to globalization and industrial production processes, insightful again. Sometimes the research itself is the end result. In other cases, her research leads to commercial products.
Meindertsma's work is included in the collections of MoMA, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Vitra Design Museum. She has won various prestigious awards, such as several Dutch Design Awards, the Index Award and the Future Award.
