This image is a cover of Vogue magazine. It was designed by artist Helen Dryden for the September 1, 1921 issue of Autumn Fabrics and Original Vogue Designs. This issue was largely devoted to the "warp and woof of fashion." In this case, the textiles from which the styles of the day, such as the bouffant silhouette, were made. To illustrate the abundance and variety of materials available in the fall, Helen Dryden retold history by depicting two women walking through a park in full skirts and coats. Behind them, beneath brilliantly hued autumn branches, a parade of horse-drawn carriages, driven by colorful coachmen.
