Remember Solitaire Wooden Board Game | Design Game for One Player

Solitaire is the classic board game for one player, redesigned by the German brand Remember. The board is solid wood and the 32 playing balls are frosted glass in the colours Remember is known for. At 29 by 29 cm it fits any table, and because it also works as an object it can stay out when you are not playing.

Jumping until one ball is left

You start with a full board apart from one empty hollow. You jump a ball over a neighbouring ball in a straight line, horizontally or vertically, and take the ball you jumped over off the board. You repeat that until no jump is possible. The aim: end with one ball, ideally in the centre. It sounds simple, but most people end up with three or four balls that can no longer reach each other.

Solid wood and frosted glass

The board is made of rubberwood, with 33 milled hollows that hold the balls in place. The balls are frosted glass, 2.5 cm across — larger and heavier than the plastic pegs of a standard solitaire set, and pleasant to handle. They come in a cloth bag, so you can put them away without them rattling or rolling off.

A game for one

Where most games need an opponent, Solitaire you play alone. That makes it a different sort of pastime: you can put it down and pick it up later, and you play against your previous attempt rather than against someone else. Good for a rainy afternoon, and a game that stays out even when nobody comes round.

A game from the 17th century

Solitaire has been played since the seventeenth century and has picked up hardly any rules since — what makes it hard lies in the mathematics, not the complexity. Remember reworked the form rather than the game: the same board, but in wood and glass and in its own colours.
