The Excalibur is a toilet brush by Philippe Starck, named after King Arthur's sword. The holder has a hollow grip that closes around your hand like the hilt of a sword. You find yourself calling “En garde” as you pull it out. This version is light grey.
A toilet brush that can stay in sight
Most toilet brushes get hidden away. Not this one. The clean design and straight lines make it an object that deserves to be seen in any cloakroom. That was exactly the idea behind it: to give an everyday object the attention it does not normally get, and turn it into something remarkable.
The brush tapers and sits on a long stem, so you can clean deep into the bowl without wetting your hand. The holder catches the water from the brush and is easy to clean.
Light grey
Light grey is the most restrained of the four colours. It does not stand out against white sanitary ware and suits almost any bathroom — unlike the acid yellow, which rather wants to be seen.
Brush worn out?
When the brush wears out you simply replace it, so the holder lasts for years. The replacement brushes come in a set of two. They also fit the original nineties series.

Philippe Starck x Heller
Philippe Starck was invited by Alan J. Heller in 1993 to design a toilet brush, which came to market in 1995. Starck was fascinated by the American passion for cleaning and had long wanted to design a bathroom accessory. “It is a product I have wanted to make for 20 years,” he said at the time in the New York Times. “Designing a toilet brush would be the most modest service I could offer. I always thought it would be the apotheosis of my career.”
The French designer and architect is known worldwide for his mix of humour and elegance, in everything from furniture to entire interiors. He approached Heller because that company could build the moulds his design required. In 2000 the Excalibur entered the permanent collection of MoMA.
After its success in the late nineties the brush left the market. This is the reissue, now made entirely of recycled plastic.
