Tea Towel & Hand Towel in One | TwoTowel Deep Red | Vij5

The TwoTowel is a hand towel and a tea towel in one cloth. Two kitchen towels that normally hang side by side are brought together here: a carefully built gradient in colour and in weave lets the two halves run into one another. The hand towel half is beige and runs into the deep red tea towel half. A design by Anieke Branderhorst for the Dutch design label Vij5.

The loop marks the two halves

There is a loop in the middle of the cloth. Hang it from that and the two halves fall to either side, so you see at a glance that this is one cloth with two functions. Hung from the loop, the cloth reaches about 80 cm down.

Several producers said it could not be made

A tea towel and a hand towel are normally woven on two different machines. The TwoTowel has to be something of both, so it has to come off one machine. Several producers therefore called the design unproducible. Anieke Branderhorst, herself a co-founder of Vij5, worked it out technically with textile designer Jolijn Fiddelaers, and eventually a weaving mill in Turkey took on the experiment.

About Vij5

Vij5 is a Dutch design label of interior accessories, furniture and lighting. Arjan van Raadshoven and Anieke Branderhorst are its founders and put the collection together. The attention to the product and the story behind it come first. When a concept appeals to them it is translated into something that can be produced, made with care for materials and by skilled craftspeople. They work with well-known designers such as Floris Hovers, Maarten Baptist, Ontwerpduo, Daphna Laurens and David Derksen.
