Lexon Orbe | Rechargeable LED Lamp with a Magnetic Sphere

A lamp after the cup-and-ball game

Nelson Fossey designed the Orbe for French design brand Lexon, taking the bilboquet as his starting point: the old cup-and-ball game. The lamp is made of a base and a loose sphere that a magnet holds in place, joined by a cord of 24 centimetres. You turn the sphere upwards, towards the wall or onto your book, or rest it beside the base on the table — there is a flat spot on its underside so it does not roll away.

Nine light colours, one button

There is a single push button on the back of the base. With it you turn the lamp on, move through the nine colours and dim the light smoothly. If you only want warm and cool white, press three times quickly. The battery lasts up to 48 hours at 75% brightness and charges in about five hours over USB-C.

Indoors and outdoors

The Orbe is splash-proof to IPX4, so it can come along to the balcony, the garden or the pool. In 2023 the design received both a Red Dot Design Award and a Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum, as well as an iF Design Award.
