Lexon Tykho 3 | Bathroom Radio and Bluetooth Speaker

A radio that sits in MoMA

Marc Berthier designed the Tykho in 1997 for Lexon: a square case with a rubbery finish and an antenna that doubles as the tuning dial. Two years later MoMA in New York added it to its permanent collection, and on 20 March 2000 it appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, submerged in a bowl of water under the headline 'The Rebirth of Design'. It was the first time a design rather than a person carried an entire issue. The Centre Pompidou in Paris and Cooper Hewitt in Washington hold it in their collections too.

What the Tykho 3 gained

The shape stayed, the technology moved with the times. Alongside the FM radio there is now a 3 watt Bluetooth speaker inside, with a rechargeable 2000 mAh battery that lasts twenty hours. Charging is done with the supplied USB-C cable, in about four hours. It is still splash-proof, so the bathroom, the kitchen and the terrace remain its regular spots.
