Olafur Eliasson is a Danish-Icelandic sculptor and installation artist, known for his works with light, water and temperature. He is mainly concerned with the relationship between technology and physical phenomena such as movement and reflection, and works those elements into his artistic concepts.
He was born in 1967 in Copenhagen and spent his youth in both Denmark and Iceland. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1989 to 1995 and afterwards set up a studio in Berlin. His work is held in many private collections and museums, including the Guggenheim in New York and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.
Buying a Little Sun supports their social project. It raises money to make solar lamps and chargers available at affordable prices in impoverished areas of Africa. It is a clean alternative to expensive and toxic fuel-based lighting.
Little Sun started as a small social enterprise, making a portable solar lamp for people in areas of Ethiopia without electricity. That work has since grown considerably, and the foundation now also focuses on product development and on education about the environment.
