Set your own length

Coatrack by the Meter is a wall coat rack of powder-coated steel, designed by Maarten Baptist for the Dutch design label Vij5. A hook is laser-cut out of a square steel tube of 4 × 4 cm every ten centimetres, and then bent outwards by hand. It is not a fixed rack but a system: you choose the lengths and the parts, and link them together until you have exactly the rack your wall calls for. The connecting plates are supplied according to the number of elements, so the parts line up seamlessly.

The parts

Everything comes in the same four colours, so you can mix them or carry one colour all the way through.

Rack of 100 cm — ten hooks

Rack of 50 cm — five hooks

Rack of 20 cm — two hooks. The actual length is 19.76 cm, a nod by Vij5 to the designer’s year of birth

Corner piece — 90 degrees, 10 cm per side, without hooks. Horizontally around a corner, or vertically for a difference in height

Extension piece — 20 or 50 cm without hooks, for a quiet stretch between the hooks

Oak shelf — rests on exactly two hooks

After the example of the Shakers

The design refers to the Shakers, the American religious community known for its craftsmanship and its plain, austere furniture. They fitted peg rails along the full length of the wall, right around the room. As in their work, everything superfluous has been left out here: there is no board, no frame and no visible fixing, only the tube and the hooks. Four colours

The rack comes in black (RAL 9017), white (RAL 9002) and mint green (RAL 6019), and also in Anodic Gold. That last one is a gold-coloured powder coating on the same steel, which is why it falls outside the RAL system.

Made in the Eindhoven region

The tubes are laser-cut industrially, which leaves little waste; the hooks are bent by hand and the powder coating is done by a company near Eindhoven. The packaging is Dutch recycled cardboard.
