MoMA Neon Mondri Vase | Design Vase De Stijl | Mondrian

The Neon Mondri is a vase made of acrylic panels in neon colours: red, yellow, blue and black, brighter and more transparent than the standard Mondri. Light passes through the vase and casts coloured shadows on the table, shifting as the sun moves. Designed by Frank Kerdil for MoMA, as a tribute to De Stijl and to Piet Mondrian.

Neon

This version differs from the standard Mondri in its colours. The acrylic is clearer, so more light passes through and the colours read as brighter. Anyone after a vase that stands out picks this one; anyone who prefers something quieter, the classic version.

Three chambers, three ways to stand it

Inside the vase are three separate chambers. Lay it on a different side and a different chamber comes out on top, and that is the one you use. So you decide how tall and how wide the opening is: upright for long stems, on its side for a short bunch or single blooms.

That makes it playful. With the coloured and clear panels it looks different from every angle, and different again with flowers in it than without.

De Stijl

The De Stijl movement was marked by an abstract, minimalist aesthetic built from geometric shapes and primary colours. The forms and colours of this vase refer directly to the work of Piet Mondrian, one of the movement's founders.

Frank Kerdil

Danish designer Frank Kerdil started out in graphic design and was co-owner of an advertising agency from 1984 to 1998. He then founded a product design studio. He has been nominated for numerous awards, for both product and graphic design. He also designed the Line Up vase, which is white when slid together and coloured when opened.

About MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1929 in Manhattan, New York, and has since become one of the leading museums of modern and contemporary art. Four months after it opened, a small shop appeared in the lobby. From that grew the museum's own MoMA collection: carefully selected products that fit the museum's view of good design. In that way it helps make good design accessible.
