How the Zwitscherbox works

The Zwitscherbox is a little house with birdsong, triggered by a motion sensor. As soon as you walk past, or the light goes on, the chirping of birds starts up. After about two minutes it stops by itself. The volume dial on the side turns it down or off completely. The Zwitscherbox runs on three AA batteries, which are included. You can stand it up or hang it on the wall – it finds a good spot anywhere in the house.

Acrylic or wood

The Zwitscherbox comes with different fronts. The Classic has a front in acrylic, in plain colours such as white, black, taupe and sage, or with an image — like the Forest, showing a wood in the Black Forest. Alongside those are the wooden versions, with a front in real oak, walnut or bamboo. The natural grain of the wood makes every one of them unique. The size is the same across the range: 14.5 cm high, 11 cm wide and 3.5 cm deep.

Where to hang it

The Zwitscherbox works best somewhere you pass regularly: the hall, the corridor, the toilet or the bathroom. Every time, it brings a moment of calm. It works in an office too, as a short break from work or from the screen. The Zwitscherbox brings the woods indoors, so the quiet of nature is always within reach.

Birdsong, or something else

The Zwitscherbox is the best-known model by Relaxound, but not the only one. If you prefer the sound of the sea there is the Oceanbox, and beyond that the Junglebox with jungle sounds, the Lakesidebox with ducks and the Heidibox with Alpine sounds. The smaller Satelliteboxes play a single bird — nightingale, blackbird, song thrush or tawny owl — or the sound of a wind chime, a forest stream or crickets. They can be combined, so you can put together a soundscape of your own.

1% for the planet

Relaxound donates 1% of its annual turnover to two environmental organisations. In Germany that is the Bergwaldprojekt, which works to preserve the forest. In India, where the production facility is based, part of the donation goes to Sadhana Forest: a project that refills groundwater reservoirs so that food can be grown and villagers do not have to move to the urban slums.
