Glassware and tableware with character

A glass can be so much more than a functional object. Different shapes and colours turn it into an eye-catcher, or a small work of art for the table. This collection holds glasses, carafes, plates and bowls that draw the eye straight away: handmade Italian glass with a little animal at the bottom, a plastic design classic from 1964, a glass that looks as though it has been crushed, and a self-cooling terracotta carafe. All of them striking designs – conversation pieces that give pleasure and raise a smile in everyday use.

Ichendorf Milano

A large part of this collection comes from Ichendorf Milano. This originally German brand makes mouth-blown glass in Italy. Their best-known series are Animal Farm, with a small glass animal at the bottom of the glass or carafe, and Tabby Cat, where a cat lies in various poses at the bottom of the glass. There are also Desert Plants with cacti, Birds with birds and Christmas Tales for the festive season. Every piece is made by hand, so no two items are exactly alike.

Heller Max: a classic from 1964

The Max tableware by Lella and Massimo Vignelli was designed in 1964 and has been in continuous production at Heller since 1971. The classic is still much sought after by design enthusiasts. The plates, bowls and beakers stack precisely into one another, which was new at the time and still surprises today. The separate pieces — plates, mugs, cup and saucer and small bowls — come in a range of colours.

Dutch design

From the Netherlands comes the Deukglas by Rob Brandt: a glass of recycled material that looks like a crushed disposable cup. It follows on from the Deukbeker, a ceramic coffee cup shaped like a crushed plastic beaker, designed in 1975. From the design label Vij5 comes the Tap Water Carafe, a terracotta carafe that cools the water itself by evaporation. The stopper, shaped like a tap, is a reminder that this is tap water.
